How it reads
Blackened is, in Farrow & Ball's own words, its coolest white, with a hint of grey, historically made with the addition of lamp black pigment. It belongs to the brand's group of Architectural Neutrals, the whites meant for minimal and industrial schemes.
Its character depends on the light. Colour writer Michele of Hello Lovely notes that it 'can read blue or grey or white'. Farrow & Ball names All White as its complementary white and suggests it in Full Gloss alongside stainless steel in kitchens.
What Blackened is
Blackened is Farrow & Ball's coolest white. The brand says it has a hint of grey and was historically made with lamp black pigment, which is where the name comes from.
It sits in Farrow & Ball's Architectural Neutrals group, the whites intended for minimal, modern and industrial schemes rather than soft traditional ones.
How it behaves in light
Blackened changes more than most whites. Michele of Hello Lovely says it 'can read blue or grey or white', and that where there is less natural light it appears less blue.
In the Morgan Harrison Home rooms on this page, with big windows and pale oak, it reads as a clean, cool white. In a dim room, expect it to drift toward soft grey.
Where to use it
The real rooms here use it across a whole house: kitchen, dining room, living rooms and a stairwell, a good example of a cool white carried through open-plan spaces.
Farrow & Ball suggests it in Full Gloss alongside stainless steel in kitchens, and readers of Hello Lovely often choose it for bedrooms.
What it sits next to
Farrow & Ball's complementary white is All White No. 2005. Real Homes recommends it as the bright cool white to put next to greys, and retailers note it works alongside Strong White and All White.
On this site, compare it with Pointing, a much warmer Farrow & Ball white, and Chantilly Lace, a bright clean white from Benjamin Moore.
