How it reads
India Yellow is Farrow & Ball's deep mustard, described by the brand as "a strong and moody yellow". It is famously named after the pigment once collected from the urine of cows fed on mango leaves, and that story tells you what to expect: a yellow with earth and a little brown in it, closer to ochre than to lemon. Farrow & Ball names New White as its complementary white and suggests using it in moderation in small rooms, where its intensity can take over.
In a home by Crystal Sinclair Designs, photographed by Adrian Gaut, it runs over walls, trim and ceiling in a bedroom and sitting room, with tan velvet, caramel carpet and dark brown drapery, so the whole scheme sits in one warm register. Farrow & Ball shows it with Railings, Shaded White and Tanner's Brown, and says that beside a dark tone like Tanner's Brown it becomes "really cosy and surprisingly un-yellow".
