Shoji White

Shoji White is a cream that has been heavily grayed, which is why it never reads like a cream. Kylie M Interiors puts it precisely: it has a cream-yellow base, but it is 'massively neutralized by a gray base'. Sherwin-Williams simply calls it a muted white. Both are right, and the gray is what makes it behave.

In a south-facing room or in western afternoon sun it leans into its warm foundation and reads as a soft, warm off-white. In a north- or east-facing room Kylie M describes the warmth as still present but 'more passive, grayed-out'; Hey There Home finds it 'slightly cooler and more muted' there, and Designing Vibes, who painted an entire lake house in it, says that in overcast light 'I notice more of the greige undertones' and in low light it 'can come off as a super light greige'.

Two quirks are worth knowing. Some people see a faint pink in it — Kylie M says whether you see it 'is questionable on the best of days' — and Hey There Home reports it can pick up a subtle green cast when a room is surrounded by heavy landscaping or reflected greenery.

Shoji White is a wall color first, and a whole-house wall color at that: Kylie M says it 'works well on interior walls, especially whole homes', and Designing Vibes used it on every wall of a lake house, inside and out. Hey There Home lists cabinetry and built-ins among its uses as well.

On trim it is used less often than it is paired with trim. Because it is an off-white with a gray base, it wants a cleaner white beside it — Kylie M says it 'likes white trim partners because they offer contrast' — rather than being the trim itself.

Outdoors it is a popular siding and trim white; Kylie M calls it 'a smart choice for your exterior siding or trim', and Designing Vibes' lake house wears it outside as well as in.

Sherwin-Williams' coordinating colors for Shoji White are Pure White SW 7005, Fawn Brindle SW 7640 and Perle Noir SW 9154, and Pure White is also Kylie M's first choice of trim beside it, with White Snow SW 9541 as the alternative. She is cautious about Greek Villa SW 7551 as trim and firmly against Alabaster SW 7008: 'a wink too warm and yellow for Shoji'.

It is happiest with blue-grays that have some depth and with natural wood. It is unhappy beside cream, beige and tan — Kylie M says it 'will be fussy with many cream paint colors, as well as beige and tans', and on cream cabinets her verdict is 'a hard no'.

Its relatives and rivals are Alabaster SW 7008, which is warmer and yellower; Greek Villa SW 7551; White Duck SW 7010; and Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45, which is creamier and brighter.

It fails in low light, where the gray takes over and it reads as a light greige rather than a white.

It fails beside cream. Cream cabinets, cream trim and warm beige finishes make Shoji White look gray and make themselves look yellow. If the kitchen already has cream, this is the wrong white.

And it can surprise you with green. In a room with big windows onto dense planting it can pick up a green cast from the reflected light, so sample it on the wall that faces the garden.
