How it reads

Agreeable Gray (SW 7029) is the color that turned 'greige' into a household word. With an LRV of about 60 it sits right in the comfortable middle — light enough to keep a room open, deep enough to read as a true color rather than an off-white.

Its warm beige-gray base is what makes it so forgiving: it stays neutral in most light, leans softly warm under incandescent bulbs, and can flash the faintest violet in cool north light. That balance is why it works on whole houses, cabinets, and exteriors alike.

How Agreeable Gray behaves in different light

Agreeable Gray is, in West Magnolia Charm's words, 'Sherwin William's number one selling color,' and its name is accurate: it gets along with most things. Sherwin-Williams gives it an LRV of 60.386 and coordinates it with Incredible White SW 7028, Extra White SW 7006 and Coral Rose SW 9004. Jenna Kate at Home describes 'warm beige or taupe undertones,' with a caveat that 'you might notice a subtle green or even a slight violet shift.'

That violet is the thing people search for. The Design Confidential puts it plainly: 'In cool light, particularly in north-facing rooms or spaces lit by daylight-temperature bulbs, AG can flash a faint violet. Not purple, exactly, but a coolness that catches people off guard.' West Magnolia Charm has seen the same in dim rooms: 'in darker rooms with low light, you may even get a peak of a purple "undertone."'

By exposure, the pattern is consistent across reviewers. North: 'the gray becomes more prominent' (Jenna Kate), and it 'reads as a straightforward light gray' (Design Confidential). South: 'South-facing rooms bring the beige forward.' East: 'warm morning light... makes AG look inviting in the first half of the day' (Design Confidential), though West Magnolia Charm notes it 'will show cooler in the morning in an east-facing room.' West: West Magnolia Charm says west-facing light is 'cooler in the morning and warmer or brighter in the afternoon/ early evening.' Bulbs: 'Warm-toned bulbs (2700K-3000K) push AG toward beige,' while Jenna Kate warns that 'cool LED bulbs or blue-toned artificial lighting can pull the gray undertones forward.'

Walls, cabinets, doors and exteriors

On walls it is the definition of a whole-house color. West Magnolia Charm: 'Anywhere! Use Agreeable Gray throughout the house.' Three Bears Home Staging notes it 'can wash out just a bit on walls that get direct hits of light but generally holds its color quite well.'

On cabinets, the Design Confidential says it 'reads as a soft, warm alternative to white or stark gray,' and Jenna Kate adds that painting 'interior doors or cabinetry in Agreeable Gray is a subtle but impactful way to add warmth and depth.'

Outside, two reviewers give the same warning. Design Confidential: 'AG works on house exteriors, but with a caveat: colors read lighter outside.' Three Bears: it 'can look much lighter in an outdoor environment than you may expect.'

What it sits next to

Trim is where the disagreement is. Sherwin-Williams itself lists Extra White SW 7006 as a coordinating color, but Jenna Kate at Home says the opposite: 'Agreeable Gray can clash when paired with icy whites like SW Extra White or Chantilly Lace, making it look dingy.' Her picks are Pure White SW 7005, High Reflective White SW 7757 and Benjamin Moore White Dove. The Design Confidential agrees on Pure White as 'the most popular pairing for good reason.' Three Bears prefers 'the low-chroma crispness of Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White 7757.'

For accents, Design Confidential suggests Sea Salt SW 6204 and Rainwashed SW 6211; Three Bears likes 'gray-blues and gray-greens, like Benjamin Moore Iced Marble 1578,' and warns that Agreeable Gray 'doesn't really like to play with tan and creams.' West Magnolia Charm pairs it with Dovetail SW 7018 as a dark accent. Jenna Kate says it 'works beautifully with both white and stained wood cabinetry.'

Against its neighbors: Repose Gray SW 7015 'leans cooler and crisper; Agreeable Gray is warmer and more adaptable' (Jenna Kate). Accessible Beige SW 7036 is, per Three Bears, more of a beige than a gray, while Agreeable Gray is the grayer greige. Revere Pewter HC-172 is darker, and 'can read a bit muddier or green depending on the lighting' (Jenna Kate). West Magnolia Charm gives the LRVs as Agreeable Gray 60, Repose Gray 58, Accessible Beige 58, Revere Pewter 55.51 and Edgecomb Gray 63; we have not verified those figures against each brand's page, except Revere Pewter, which Benjamin Moore lists at 55.05.

Where Agreeable Gray fails

It fails in low light. Jenna Kate: 'Agreeable Gray can lean grayer (and even a little muddy) in these conditions, making the space feel dull or flat.' The Design Confidential says the same of rooms that rely on artificial light, where it 'can look drab and muddy.'

It fails next to the wrong white: 'AG doesn't play well with strongly warm whites' (Design Confidential), and next to icy whites it 'can clash' (Jenna Kate). Pick the white deliberately.

And it may simply fail the fashion test. Jenna Kate lists 'May feel dated compared to newer creamy whites' among its cons, though she also calls it still 'a popular choice for homeowners who want a warm, versatile neutral.' West Magnolia Charm: 'I know gray is said to be falling off, but I'm not sure that is 100% true.'

What white trim goes with Agreeable Gray?
Pure White SW 7005 is the most-recommended pairing. Jenna Kate at Home warns that icy whites such as Extra White or Chantilly Lace can make it look dingy, though Sherwin-Williams lists Extra White as a coordinating color.
Is Agreeable Gray still in style?
Jenna Kate at Home calls it still a popular choice but notes it may feel dated next to newer creamy whites. West Magnolia Charm is not convinced gray is really falling off.
Agreeable Gray vs Repose Gray: what is the difference?
