How it reads

Poe is a Roman Clay colour from Portola Paints, which describes it as a "deep plum". Portola says it was originally named Black Magic and was inspired by the writing of Edgar Allan Poe.

In the John Ruggiero Studio entry on this page, photographed by Gieves Anderson, it wraps the walls and ceiling of an entry hall with a plum velvet bench, a black lacquered door and a large textile artwork.

What Poe is

Poe is a colour in Portola Paints' Roman Clay range, described by Portola as a "deep plum". It was originally named Black Magic and takes its name from Edgar Allan Poe.

Roman Clay is Portola's clay-based plaster finish: smooth to the touch, with a mottled, marble-like movement.

How it behaves in light

Left unsanded, Roman Clay has an ultra-low sheen, so Poe absorbs light and reads velvety and deep. Portola notes its optional Topcoat adds a subtle sheen and darkens colours by 10 to 20 percent.

Portola publishes no LRV. A plum this dark will shift toward aubergine at night, so sample it on site.

Where to use it

In the John Ruggiero Studio entry on this page, photographed by Gieves Anderson, Poe covers the walls and ceiling of an entry hall, with a plum velvet bench, a black lacquered door, a crystal ceiling light and a large woven textile artwork.

Matching the velvet to the plaster makes the small space feel rich and deliberate. Portola recommends Roman Clay for smooth interior walls only, not wet rooms or exteriors.

How to apply it

Portola applies Roman Clay in thin, overlapping coats with a putty knife or trowel. The final coat shows the most movement.

On this site, compare Poe with Farrow & Ball Brinjal and Sherwin-Williams Socialite for painted plums, and with Portola's Pixie lime wash, also photographed for John Ruggiero Studio by Gieves Anderson.

A deep plum. Portola Paints says it was originally called Black Magic and was inspired by the writing of Edgar Allan Poe.
What is Roman Clay?
Portola describes Roman Clay as a clay-based, plaster-like finish made from natural ingredients with no VOCs. It feels smooth and dries to a mottled, marble-like look.
How is Poe Roman Clay applied?
Portola applies Roman Clay in thin, overlapping coats with a putty knife or trowel, ideally over smooth, level-5 interior drywall. The base coat dries in 2 to 4 hours.
Can Roman Clay be used in a bathroom or outside?
No. Portola says Roman Clay is not suitable for wet areas such as showers, for exteriors, or for millwork like trim, doors and cabinetry.
How much does Poe cost?
On Portola's site a 1 kilo tub is $30, 5 kilo $92, 10 kilo $180 and 20 kilo $345. Portola estimates roughly 20 to 25 square feet per kilo across a base and final coat.
Is there a paint version of Poe?
Yes. Portola sells Poe in its Roman Clay Matching paint line, for trim or areas where plaster will not work.
