The difference

Read from the numbers

Extra White is the lighter of the two at LRV 86, 3 points above White Tie at LRV 83. White Tie leans warm where Extra White reads cool. Both belong to the white family. For a whole room, Extra White is the safer, more forgiving choice thanks to its higher LRV, while White Tie is the bolder pick.

How they read

In their own words

White Tie No. 2002 is a pale creamy white from Farrow & Ball, named after the starched cotton of white-tie evening dress. Farrow & Ball lists Wimborne White No. 239 as its complementary white and groups it with New White and Matchstick, and with Farrow's Cream and Dorset Cream.

Extra White is a bright, slightly cool white — the closest Sherwin-Williams gets to a gallery wall. At LRV 86 it is crisp and reflective, with a faint blue-grey lean that keeps it clean rather than creamy. It is the white for architecture: plaster reliefs, coffered ceilings, a bank of steel windows.
